What is overnight support under the NDIS?

Overnight support falls under Core Supports in your NDIS plan. There are two types, and the right one depends on what the participant needs during the night.

Passive overnight support

A support worker sleeps onsite at the participant’s home and is available if needed during the night. This suits participants who are mostly independent overnight but need someone nearby in case of an incident, a fall, or a medical episode. The support worker is on call in the home from the agreed start time (usually around 10pm) through to morning.

Active overnight support

A support worker stays awake and actively assists the participant throughout the night. This is for participants who need regular repositioning, toileting assistance, medication administration, or behavioural support during overnight hours. The worker is engaged and available for the full shift. Your NDIS plan may fund one or both types depending on the participant’s assessed needs. If you are unsure which type your plan covers, we can help you check.

What to expect from Authentic Care

We assign consistent support workers to overnight shifts so the participant sees the same faces each week. Before any overnight shift begins, we offer a free meet and greet so the participant and their family can meet the worker, walk through the home routine, and confirm everything is comfortable.

Our overnight support workers are NDIS Worker Screened, police checked, first aid certified, and trained for the specific needs of each participant they support.

We provide overnight supports seven nights a week, year round, including public holidays. If a rostered worker is unavailable, we fill the shift from our existing team rather than sending someone the participant has never met.

Is overnight support right for your situation?

Overnight supports are commonly funded for participants who live independently but need someone present for safety, participants in shared living arrangements (SIL) who need overnight assistance, participants transitioning out of hospital or a family home into their own accommodation, and participants whose support needs increase during the night due to medical or behavioural factors.

If the participant’s plan does not currently include overnight funding but their needs have changed, this can be raised at the next plan review or through a change of circumstances request to the NDIA.
